FIVE FUNCTIONS OF A NEW TESTAMENT CHURCH
1. Worship - Deuteronomy 6:4-9; Hebrews 10:19-25
2. Discipleship - Luke 9:23; Matthew 28:18-20
3. Evangelism - John 3:1-18; John 4:27-38
4. Fellowship - Acts 2:42
5. Ministry - Matthew 25:31-46; James 2:14-16
Worship
We are taught in the Scriptures that we should "love the Lord our God with all our heart, with all our soul, and with all our strength." This is the essence of true worship and describes what Jesus meant when He told us to worship God the Father "in spirit and in truth."
Discipleship
The Great Commission, found in Matthew 28:18-20, teaches us that we are to make disciples of others. As members of a New Testament Church we are called to teach, equip, and train new believers on how to live the Christian life to the fullest and to discover the meaning of an abundant life (John 10:10).
Evangelism
After the "woman at the well" met Jesus, she immediately went to her village and told everyone she could about Jesus. As believers we must do the same, not only with our words but also by our actions. It is our commitment at the Garden Road Baptist Church to design all of our functions and activities to be evangelistic in spirit.
Fellowship
One of the great needs in our society today is fellowship and friendship. Even with the great crowds of people that are moving to the Pearland area, there are many that are lonely. The most faithful and enduring friends one can meet are found in the Lord’s House, and yet there is one who is greater than any other and that is Jesus Christ. It is essential that we have fellowship with Jesus and with other believers.
Ministry
One of our greatest expressions of love for Christ can be seen through our ministries. As Jesus walked on this earth He ministered to people of all kinds of backgrounds with all kinds of problems. As followers of Christ we must find ways to share the Gospel message by meeting the needs of others. Our motivation for ministry should always be to help others as though we were helping Jesus Christ Himself.
